Why Hyaluronic acid deserves a spot in your routine?
Hyaluronic acid, the ingredient you see everywhere nowadays. Best known for its plumping effect. It's used in serums, moisturizers, injectable fillers, etc.
But is it worth the buzz?
What is it?
Hyaluronic acid is a substance produced naturally by our bodies. It helps to maintain the moisture and keeps our skin hydrated, plumped and healthier. Hyaluronic acid can attract and retain up to 1000 times its molecular weight in water to provide long-lasting hydration while increasing cell 'volume' to facilitate a firming and lifting effect. It will fill in fine lines from within to give an instantly refreshing effect. Unfortunately the amount of hyaluronic acid our body produce will decrease as we age. It can lead to dehydrated skin that's more prone to wrinkles.
Hyaluronic acid in skincare
There are low and high molecular weights to ensure optimal hydration. Hyaluronic acid has a high molecular weight, and will therefore not penetrate the skin. It will work on the surface levels to smooth and hydrate. Then we also have low molecular weight or so called 'sodium hyaluronate' which is a salt that's derived from hyaluronic acid. It will penetrate into deeper layers of the skin and helps to reduce the signs of aging.
Hyaluronic acid is incredibly gentle and therefore helpful for all skin types. The natural calming benefits will make it also suitable for the most sensitive, redness-prone skin.
When to apply
Apply after cleansing, while your skin is still damp, so it can penetrate deeper. Follow with a moisturizer to lock in the moisture.
